BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLANS FOR GENERAL PRACTITIONERS
CASE STUDY
In 1999 a prescribing practice opened a new surgery, with a state-of-the-art
burglar alarm. The alarm however was faulty and sounded erroneously
and intermittently over the next few months. It became common practice
for a domestic who lived nearby to let herself into the surgery and
re-set the alarm.
One evening the alarm sounded and was attended by the domestic, who
was assaulted by burglars. The burglars stole a small vanload of medical
equipment and all the contents of the controlled drugs safe. The burglars
set a fire to cover their tracks and all of the paper patient records
were destroyed, as was all of the IT equipment.
None of the damage, loss of stock or equipment was covered by insurance,
as there was a record that the burglar alarm was faulty. All losses
including re-stocking of the pharmacy had to be paid for out of the
GP Partners’ income. In addition the Practice was severely disrupted
during the Police investigation, the injured domestic sued the practice
and won £70,000 in damages and a rival practice set up close by,
resulting in the Practice losing 23% of its patient base.
